Honglian type hybrid rice mainly promoted by the company is the original scientific research achievement of Academician Zhu Yingguo's team from Wuhan University. Together with China's "Wild Abortive Type" and Japan's "Baotai Type", Honglian type is internationally recognized as one of the three cytoplasmic male sterility types of hybrid rice. Honglian type hybrid rice have been widely recognized in China and "One Belt One Road" countries since its emergence. It has been promoted over 26.7 million hectares, with direct economic benefits of over 9 billion yuan, and still maintains a rapid growth trend. President Xi Jinping has made the important instructions of "Food Security Should be Rely Only on Ourselves" and "Honglian type hybrid rice should serve well for ‘One Belt One Road’ countries".
The company attaches great importance to research and development, and is committed to breeding Honglian type and two-line rice varieties with excellent quality, strong comprehensive resistance and high yield, so as to consolidate and enhance the core competitiveness of the enterprise. Honglian type hybrid rice of the company has realized mechanical direct seeding of both A line and R line at the same time, significantly reducing labor and cost input, and has significant advantages of disease and insect resistance, high temperature tolerance, high yield and broad adaptability as well as low cadmium adsorption rate. Up to now, Shengliangyou 311, a new variety bred by the company, passed the national certification in 2021. Seven varieties including Shengliangyou Luojiazhan, Shengliangyou 301, Shengliangyouxiang 1, Shengliangyou 19 Xiang, Luohongyou 121, Luohongyou 521 and Luoliangyou 1280, are being applied for national or provincial certification. Three varieties including R224, R322 and Luoxiang 1A have obtained the New Plant Variety Authority, while six varieties including 2413S, R1916, Shengliangyou 311, Shengxiang 301S, Shengliangyou Luoxiangzhan and Shengliangyou Luoxiangzhan have applied for New Plant Variety Authority and entered the actual examination stage. At the same time, two invention patents "A Field System for Hybrid Rice Seed Production" and "A Hybrid Rice Seed Production Method with Mixed Sowing and Harvesting" applied by the company have also entered the actual examination stage.
The company is actively preparing to build a modern hybrid rice breeding base and a large-scale national hybrid rice seed production base. Seed production base is located in Luotian, Hubei Province, which has been officially launched in early 2021. The first phase of the base construction is 80 hectares, and it will reach 667 hectares in 3 years. The base's field roads, irrigation, drainage and other infrastructure can reach modern seed production level, which can meet the demand of seed production of mainly seed enterprises in Hubei Province. It is an inevitable requirement for the future development of rice seed industry in Hubei province to build a hybrid rice seed production base with brand effect. The construction of Luotian base has attracted wide attention from all walks of life, and has received strong support from Hubei Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Hubei Provincial Department of Science and Technology, China Association of Science and Technology, Hubei Provincial Association of Science and Technology, Luotian County Party Committee and County Government, etc.
